At JCAN’s October meeting, Jack Gorman presented JCAN NYC’s 2026-2027 Advocacy Platform. Jack guided the development of the platform as co-chair of JCAN NYC’s Advocacy Team and a member of JCAN NYC’s Steering Committee. The platform has 3 areas of focus:
Solar Energy in New York State: centered around 5 bills, including bills for automated residential permitting, virtual power plants (the GREAT Act) and standards for municipal solar.
Resources for the Transition to Renewable Energy in NYS: focused on obtaining at least $1Billion for the Sustainable Futures Fund in the FY27 budget and early adoption of the Cap and Invest program, also known as the Clear Air Initiative.
Advocacy Action for New York City: including LL97 implementation; Mark Levine’s recent proposal to expand renewable energy and battery storage across city-owned properties; and the Green Healthy Schools initiative.
Jack said that “solar is the present and the future,” observing that on June 3, 2026, solar energy supplied 29% of statewide demand; he reminded the attendees that solar is also the least expensive form of energy, and limitless! Jack concluded by saying that JCAN continues to support the wide range of actions needed to transition to renewable energy and achieve climate justice: from thermal energy networks, to heat pumps and to bills like the Clean Deliveries Act.
