Our Story and Accomplishments
From our formation to today, we have mobilized Jews in New York to take action on climate change. We have taken grassroots action by getting groups out to marches, visiting legislators, testifying in the legislature, conducting phone and letter-writing campaigns, organizing with our partners, and hosting educational events.
Here are some of our key actions and successes throughout our history:
2016
Began meeting in Upper West Side homes monthly to learn about climate issues and organize for state and city action
Signed on to the NY Renews NYS campaign to achieve clean and renewable energy in a just transition through the Climate and Community Protection Act (CCPA); signed on to the Sierra Club campaign for offshore wind power
2017
Mobilized 40 Jews to attend the April 2017 People’s Climate March in Washington DC by sponsoring a Shabbat Friendly bus with Hazon; collaborated with local Jewish and interfaith organizations
Made first visit to lobby for the NYS CCPA; met with Senator Marisol Alcantara in June.
2018
Organized climate activist panel in February co-hosted by the Marlene Meyerson Manhattan JCC and attended by over 120 attendees in February. Moderated by Rachel Jacoby Rosenfield, panel included climate and environmental justice activists Elizabeth Yeampierre, UPROSE, Eddie Bautista, Environmental Justice Alliance, Peter Iwanowicz, Environmental Advocates and Dan Sherrell, NY Renews as well as artist, Basya Schechter.
Actively supported the CCPA and the NYC Dirty Buildings legislation (both subsequently passed) through multiple trips to Albany, legislative visits to local elected officials, testimony and letter writing and call in campaigns.
Organized and hosted December Manhattan Climate Justice Forum to launch the 2019 campaign for the Climate and Community Protection Act.
2019
Presented Living the Change panel in January with Reverand Fletcher Harper of Greenfaith NYC, Mirele Goldsmith, co-founder of JCAN-NYC, and Hody Nemes, JCAN Steering Committee Member
Partnered with Marlene Meyerson JCC Manhattan to present the film The Human Element, March 2019
In partnership with NY Renews, helped pass the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (formerly CCPA) in June, a groundbreaking climate law, transforming New York State into a leader within the US on Climate
Created and widely distributed our High Holiday resource packet , helping New York synagogues and religious leaders focus their High Holidays on climate change
Mobilized JCAN members to promote and participate in the September 20 Global Climate Strike, joining over 250,000 participants in NYC;
Co-founded the NYC Jewish Climate Coalition in support of the September 20 Global Climate Strike, along with Hazon, the Marlene Meyerson JCC Manhattan and The Jewish Theological Seminary
Supported and participated in December Environmental Justice forum with Senator Robert Jackson
